Paper Honeycomb

Paper honeycomb is replacing polystyrene foam in packaging – it’s recyclable and provides good protection and insulation. The adhesive bonds the honeycomb structure together and attaches it to outer materials.

Thermal box liners for chilled food delivery, corner protection for shipping, cardboard pallets, void fill – these applications are growing as companies move away from plastic packaging. The adhesive needs to maintain structural strength whilst being recyclable with the paper.

Production involves expanding flat-packed honeycomb by pulling it perpendicular to the paper layers. The expansion ratio can be 20:1 or higher, putting stress on the node adhesive. Compression strength after expansion determines load-bearing capacity. Food packaging applications need adhesives that don’t contaminate and meet food contact regulations.
